Profile of Yang Berbahagia Dato' Yim Yoo Loon
A life dedicated to learning, education and the arts.
Professor Dato' Yim given the name of Yoo Loon and alternately, Xian Pu was
born in 1911 in Changsha Hunan Province.
Upon graduation from the History facullty of Hunan first Normal College
he took up teaching at the Hunan Li Ling Normal College for girl from
1934-1937.
He came to Malaya at the age of 26 and served variously as teacher in Chinese
and history at Chung Ling High School and Malayan Teacher's Colklege Penang as well
as holiday teacher's training courses. Later, he was appointed lecturer in
classical Chinese Literature at the Language Institute Kuala Lumpur. He retired in 1970.
Besides teaching, Professor Dato, Yim is a prolific writer. He founded the Nan
Fung Literary Magazine in 1938 and become its first editor-in-chief. He has, in
addition published copious writings of various genre. These include:
- A Brief History of Chinese Literature
- The Xiang Fun Hall Book of Verse
- Rhapsodic Songs
- A Journey of Ten Thousand Miles
- The Work of Yim Yoo Loon (in three volumes)
- The Calligraphy of Yim Yoo Loon
A distinguished calligrapher Professor Yim has had his work exhibited at Forest
of Steel Museum in Kaifeng, the Quifu Confucian Museum In Shandong Province and
the Hunan Celebrities Museum.
Always committed to the betterment of society, he has also donated a good deal
of his calligraphy to help various good causes.
Achievements of Professor Yim
In recognition of his achievements Professor Yim has been honored both in China and Malaysia.
In 1991, he was mentioned in "Outstanding Overseas Chinese"
published by the Beijing Oceanic Press.
In 1993, he received the Beijing Award for
Calligraphic Art.
In 1996 he was invited to visit Normal University of Shanxi Province and appointed hononary
professor.
In 1997, he was given an honours award the Tianjin Festival of Caligraphy and
in 1995 the Medal of Honour of the Chinese Malaysian Cultural Council.
In July 2001, he was bestowed a datoship (DMPN) by his Excellency the
governor of Penang. In the mean time he continues to serve as advisor to the
Malaysian Institute of Calligraphy and Painting, the Equatorial Art College Penang
and the Penang Art College.
In 2003, leading figures of commerce and industry as
well luminaries in the artistic and educational sphere joined in tribute to Professor
Dato' Yim by co-sponsoring the publication of the "Complete Works of Yim Yoo Loon"
in three volumes. Symposia and retrospective exhibitions were also held.
