October 7, 2001: Relative Steps in to Raise Funds for Gift of Life Nephew

Charity begins at home and it sure has for Grace Tong, a sales executive by profession. Together with a group of friends, Tong has set out on a mission to raise RM10,000 for the Gift of Life Programme that her nephew is a beneficiary of.

A check of RM2,000 from
Grace Tong presented to the
Heart Patients' Fund
Two-month old Eh Wai Siang (now three months old) successfully underwent corrective heart surgery for the Transposition of Great Arteries at the Adventist Hospital on August 28, 2001.

With their total family income of only RM2,700, Wai Siang's parents, father Eh Boon Leng and mother Lim Moy Sim would not have been able to afford the RM40,000 surgery for their son.

However, under the Gift of Life Programme, the cost of Wai Siang’s surgery was only RM17,100.

Tong came to visit at the hospital and found out that Wai Siang was a recipient of the Gift of Life Programme. She knew instantly that she wanted to get involved.

"I just wanted to help Wai Siang and others like him, that is why I am trying to play my part to help raise funds for a Programme that has benefited Wai Siang," said Tong at a press conference held at the Adventist Hospital.

Tong, together with a group of friends have raised RM2,000 date.  Their goal is to raise RM10,000 for the Gift of Life Programme.

Speaking on behalf of her friends who were unable to attend the press conference, Tong added, "Helping others is a reward in itself, we’re all just trying to do our best to lend a hand to others less fortunate than ourselves."

The Gift of Life Programme is a joint partnership between Penang Adventist Hospital and Rotary International and has benefited 23 children in the year 2000.

In the year 2001 alone, 22 Cambodians, nine Malaysians, two Indonesians and one Filippino have benefited from the Programme. The total amount of funds received this year alone has been RM354,810.26, with more monies pledged to be donated… but the children await to be given the Gift of Life.
