Capsule Endoscopy


What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Patient has to swallow a vitamin pill sized video capsule as an endoscope. When the scope travels through the body, images are sent to a data recorder which the patient will wear on a waist belt. Most patients considers the test comfortable. Afterwards our G.I Functional Disorder Consultant will view the images on a video monitor which may take several hours. Total number of images to be seen is around 55,000.


Why Capsule Endoscopy is performed?


Capsule Endoscopy helps the doctor to determine the cause for:~

  1. Recurrent abdominal pain
  2. Diarrhoea
  3. Bleeding
  4. Anaemia
  5. It is useful to detect small bowel tumours
  6. Patients who are on medications (NSAID) for joint pains etc.
  7. Inflammatory bowel diseases
  8. Irritable bowel
  9. To monitor the therapeutic effects




How should the patient prepare himself or herself for the study:~

  • Patient will be given written instructions the day before.
  • An empty stomach allows better visualization (10 hrs before the examination).
  • The doctor will inform the time of fasting.
  • If the patient is on medications inform the doctor.
  • Cardiac patients have to inform about pace makers & other devices.
  • Patient can eat 4 hrs after ingestion of the capsule.

What happens to the Capsule Endoscopy?

  • Eight hours after ingestion the procedure is considered as finished.
  • The recorder will be removed from the patient and he/she could go home.
  • The capsule will come out in stool.
  • During study the patient should not go near MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine.

When will the Capsule Endoscopy result be ready?

  • After the equipment is returned to the consultant will process the information.
