Laboratory
Our In-house Laboratory called Penang Adventist Hospital
Clinical Pathology Laboratory Services plays an important integrated and crucial part of Penang Adventist
Hospital. It was started on 1 October 2003. Since then we had been doing about
50,000 tests per month with a turn around time of 3 hours for all tests ordered.
Our team is committed in providing a friendly environment, coupled with prompt and
accurate service that meets international standards for the community.
In the detection, diagnostic and treatment of disease, the Clinical Labo
servicratory provides a range ofes, this includes:
- Chemical Pathology
- Haematology
- Medical Microbiology
- Transfusion Medicine
- Immunology and Serology Department
- Urinalysis Department
- Clinical Parasitology
In order to succeed as one-stop, state-of-the-art
Clinical Laboratory, we have incorporated a Laboratory Information System
which provides us with real-time bar-coding of all samples that is interfaced
with our analyzers. Once results are validated, they are immediately
transmitted via the Hospital Information System to who ever is authorized to
view the results. Some of the analyzers available are:
ARCHITECT ci 8200
This analyzer is the first truly Integrated Clinical Chemistry and Immunoassay Analyzer to be
installed in the Asia Pacific region. It delivers a faster turnaround time,
with 83 Assays on Board, it has the ability to generate 1,400 tests per hour.
HAEMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT
CELL-DYN 3700
In the haematology section the laboratory has a cell counter system, which is fully automated.
It has a sample loader and can provide continuous closed sampling at any given time. The
analyzer has a multi-parameter function and its technology incorporates the laser as an
optical count and impedence count as an electrical impulse. To be more precise and accurate,
these two methods interact or complement each other before a final result is reported.
TRANSFUSSION MEDICINE DEPARTMENT
DIA-MED GEL CARD SYSTEM (SWITZERLAND)
In this department, the laboratory has a semi-automated Gel Card ID System. To ensure
reliability and to enhance patient care the laboratory does all the cross-matching and donor
screening for atypical antibodies in the Gel Card System. This system offers standardization,
and a rapid, simple way to detect blood incompatibility and also to detect atypical antibodies
present in the blood.
MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
In this department, the laboratory has installed the first automated Vitek 32 in the northern region.
Following the National Committee of Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS), the analyzer
automatically identifies the genus species of the bacteria present and the antibiotic sensitivity
testing all at the same time. This saves time and ensures reliability of test results.
Lastly, our laboratory is participating in the Randox International Quality Assurance Scheme,
where unknown samples are being analyzed and the results are sent to the United Kingdom
for interpretation. This itself enhances the quality of our laboratory’s results and magnifies
our mission statement which states that:
"We are committed in providing friendly, prompt and accurate services to our community, while meeting
international standards."
