What is LASIK?

LASIK is the procedure for correction of shortsightedness, long sightedness and astigmatism. It is an alternative to wearing optical eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK, is short for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis”, which is popular elective laser vision correction performed by refractive surgeon.

What is iLASIK?

iLASIK is the new standard for Individualized Laser Vision Correction technology. First, a WaveScan technology is used to capture the unique imperfection in each individual’s eyes. Next, Intralase blade-free technology is used to create a thin corneal flap. Lastly, Advenced CustomVue is used for personalized refractive correction. The combination of these technologies creates the best possible vision for each customer.

How is the procedure?

This procedure is done in 2 simple steps.

  • First Step: Creation of flap by the Intralase Femtosecond laser. A suction ring will be placed on the eye. The patient may feel some pressure on the eye. Meanwhile, the Intralase Femtosecond lasers will generates millions of microscopic bubbles, which are connected to form the corneal flap.
  • Second step: Laser treatment for your indivisualized prescription. The doctor will lift the flap created during the first step. Next, the Advanced Custom Vue treatment using VISX technology will be applied onto the cornea. The patient needs to keep their eyes focusing on the blinking red light throughout the procedure. When the laser treatment is completed, the corneal surfaces are cleaned. The flap is replaced to its position and the healing process begins.

The doctor will check the eyes once more after the procedure before the patient leave the centre. Vision will gradually progress within the next few days.

Are you a suitable candidate?

  • You are at least 21 years old
  • You are in good general health
  • You’ve had a stable prescription for at least one year
  • You have no existing eye disease
  • For the ladies, you must not be pregnant or breastfeeding in the past 3 months before you come for the full eye assessment or the refractive surgery.

The best way to find out if you are a suitable candidate is to arrange for a full eye assessment with us at Adventist Vision Centre

What should you do before come for full eye assessment?

Contact lenses may cause corneal distortion & dry eyes. In order to abtain accurate readings/data during the assessment for your treatment, if you are a contact lens mearer, the lenses must first be removed:

  • Soft Contact Lenses- You need to be out of your soft contact lenses for a minimum of 1 week before your full eye assessment.
  • Hard or Gas Permeable Contact Lenses- You need to be out of your hard or gas permeable contact lenses for a minimum of 3 full weeks before your full eye assessment.

What are the tests conducted during full eye assessment?

There will be a series of standard tests that will be carried out during the full eye assessment to determine the suitability of the patient:

  1. Visual Acuity Test - Current vision of the eyes with and/or without glasses will be checked
  2. Automated Refraction and Keratometry - Power of the eyes will be checked with a computerized autorefractor.
  3. Pentacam®: Non-contact Corneal Topography & Pachymetry - A 3-dimensional scan of the cornea will be made and the corneal thickness will be measured.
  4. Subjective Refraction - The power for your eyes will be measured with the phoropter trial lens set.
  5. Wavescan Aberrometry - This instrument will identify and measure the unique imperfections of your vision. This technology will produce a detailed map of your vision, called the WavePrint Map. Like fingerprints, none of the two eyes are exactly alike. The digital information from this Wavescan will then be used to guide the customVue treatment.
  6. Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy - A microscopic examination of the anterior segment of the eye will be conducted.
  7. Cycloplegic Refraction and Retinal Examination - For these examinations, eye drops will be used to dilate the pupil and relax the muscle inside the eye. The refractive power of the eye will be confirmed. After dilation, the patient may not be able to drive comfortable, as the vision would be blurry. The effect will generally last for about 3 hours. The patient may also need to wear sunglasses to reduce the glare.
  8. Tonometry - The pressure of your eyes will be measured by a non-contact tonometer.

Are there any potential side effects?

Like any other medical procedure, there are side effects that may follow the procedure. Laser Vision Correction has been performed for more than a decade and over that time; the complication rate has proved to be very low.

The most common symptoms during the first few weeks after surgery are dry eyes; glare vision and halos. However, these are temporary and do not interrupt your daily routine. It is currently the only LASIK procedure approved by NASA astronauts and US Airforce pilots.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Who should go for the iLASIK procedure?
iLASIK is a laser vision correction for those with shortsightedness (myopia), longsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. This procedure is performed on those who wish to decrease their dependency on contact lens.
  • I am currently wearing glasses for reading. Am I a suitable candidate?
An option for those wearing reading glasses is to go for Monovision laser vision correction. Monovision iLASIK produces Monovision correction in shortsightedness (myopic) adults or the long sightedness (hyperopia), with or without an abnormal curve of the cornea (astigmatism), ages 40 years old and above with presbyopia.
  • Does the iLASIK procedure hurt?
There is almost no pain involved during the procedure. Some patients may find the procedure to be just slightly uncomfortable. Anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye just before surgery begins and patients may be given a mild sedative to relax. After the procedure, the eye may feel a foreign body sensation or slight irritation for the first few hours, like a grain of sand in your eye, but most patient are very comfortable shortly thereafter.
  • Will I be able to see immediately after the procedure?
Generally, a patient will be able to see immediate results after the procedure. Vision will improve over the next few weeks (although in certain cases, vision may further fluctuates over the next few months), assuming that no additional vision correction is needed.
  • How long does the procedure take and when can I get back to work?
The actual laser vision correction only takes a few seconds, however preparation before the procedure is required. Patients are usually expected to stay with us for at least 2 hours. This procedure is done as an outpatient basis and usually a patient will be able to get back to work on the next day.
