Wellness Centre

It was the guiding philosophy of Ellen G. White that led Penang Adventist Hospital to set up a Health Education Department in 1972. The Health Education Department served the community by organizing health-screening programs for diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Public health talks were also organized to help the public to gain a better understanding of disease and risk factors related to them.

In the early 90's, the Preventive Medicine Department was formed. The Preventive Medicine Department sought to complement the acute care services of Penang Adventist Hospital thereby fulfilling the Hospital's motto of "Making Man Whole." Prevention of disease and healthy lifestyle were the two corner stones of the programs and services offered.

Expert advice to our patients
A multi-disciplinary team provides programs and services such as health risk appraisals for individuals to identify their risk factors for heart diseases, cancer and diabetes. Programs aimed at reducing risk factors (weight management, smoking cessation and cholesterol control) are also conducted.

Chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure have become common causes of death and illness. Through the Ministry of Health Lifestyle Campaign, the Malaysian public has been made aware of these diseases. Knowledge alone, however, does not translate into behavioral change. Motivation to change and acquiring skills in buying and cooking the right food to maintain health are essential in reversing the risks of disease.

In early 1996, the two departments were merged into the Adventist Wellness Centre, the first of its kind in Penang, with the objective of educating the public in living a healthy and vibrant lifestyle.

Multinational corporations like Intel, Mattel, Motorola and Hitachi are ardent participants in our Corporate Wellness Program. Some 250 people are benefiting from our Wellness programs every month.

Diabetic Education Centre
Our Diabetic Education Centre was also incorporated into the organizational structure of the Adventist Wellness Centre.  The Diabetic Education Centre is a resource centre for diabetes and aims to educate diabetics and the public on lifestyle changes for controlling diabetes and avoiding the complications of the disease.
