24-Hours Holter Monitoring

This is a continuous ambulatory ECG (Holter) monitor which is capable of detecting any transient rhythm disorders of the heart over a prolonged period of 24 to 48 hours in the patients own home or work environment or even during sleep.

Indications for Holter Monitoring

The test is indicated in patients with fainting spells, giddiness and palpitations. Such patients may not have an abnormal heart rhythm upon seeing their doctor. However, the abnormal heart rhythm may occur at home or at work. The Holter monitor may record such events at such times.

Preparation before the test

It is advisable for the patient to take a bath or shower and wear a loose fitting blouse or shirt before coming to the Penang Adventist Hospital. No fasting is required and there is no need to stop medications. Prior arrangement with the cardiologist is required.

How the test is done

Surface electrodes will be connected to a small device, the size of a small portable radio, strapped around your waist. You will be wearing the device 24 hours and rarely 48 hours depending on your cardiologists orders.

You must not shower or bathe during the 24-hour recording period.

You are required to see your cardiologist the next morning at the Heart & Vascular Centre. Any abnormal rhythms will be processed and analyzed by the technician or your own cardiologist. Your cardiologist will interpret the data and discuss your results with you during your review.
