Penang Adventist Hospital places a high value on the importance of family unit and regards
pregnancy as unique not only for the mother but for the whole family. The mother's health
during pregnancy is of utmost important. It influences your baby's well being leading towards a
successful pregnancy, delivery and postnatal recuperation.

Services Available
- Prenatal care by Obstetrician which is very important for the well being of both mother and baby, whereby any abnormalities can be detected and immediate action taken to prevent complications.
- Prenatal classes conducted by consultants, specialists and other qualified personals to share with you on what you need to know, so that you will know what to expect and be able to cope with your pregnancy, delivery and confinement.
- Delivery by Obstetrician of your choice.
- Breastfeeding counseling by nursing staff.
- Confinement stay - a single comfortable room to accommodate your husband and baby with good nursing care and appropriate meals served.
- Breastfeeding support - to support and help mother during breastfeeding period.
- Baby massage class conducted by certified IAIM provider.
- Prenatal exercise classes.

When to get admitted
- When labour pain starts ie. intermittent abdominal contractions with pain.
- With or without 'show' (blood stained mucous from the vagina).
- If there's leaking liquor (water bag breaks) even there is no pain.
- If there is bleeding from vagina at any time even though there is no abdominal pain or other sign.
- When baby is not moving like usual ie. Less baby movement felt by the mother.
What to bring
- Your appointment card and I/C
- 1 set of mother's clothes for changing on discharge
- Nursing brassiers
- 1 set of baby's clothes for changing on discharge
- Flask for hot water if you need one
Our hospital will provide you with Admission Kit comprising of towels, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, soap & jug with cold drinking water.
Note: Leave all your valuable things eg. jewelry at home. We do not take responsibility over any losses incurred.
How to get admitted
- On arrival at the hospital, check with the reception
- You will be directed to the labour & Delivery suite at level 3,
where the nurse will examine you and inform your doctor.
Meanwhile your husband can complete the admission procedures
after which he can join you and stay with you during your normal
delivery if he wishes.
- If you are admitted at night, after office hours and during public holidays,
please go straight to Emergency Room (ER). You will be directed to Labour &
Delivery Suite.
Postnatal Care
The nurses are always at hand if you need any assistance. Just press your call bell when you need help.
We encouraged all mothers to breastfeed their babies, as breast
milk offers perfect nutrition. It protects your baby against infections and allergies;
provides all the nutrients required; its convenient, economical and most importantly it
strengthens mother-baby bonding.
Your baby's care
- Your baby will be taken care of by experienced nurses.
- Injections Hepatitis B 1st dose and BCG will be given in order to protect your
baby against Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis respectively.
- Health education on care of your baby, baby bath, cord dressing
and observation for any sign of abnormality eg. Jaundice, will be given.
- Bilirubin level will also be tested before discharge, to ensure that your baby's jandice
is not in the dangerous level that can cause brain damage.
- Our Pediatrician will also examine your baby physically to detect any abnormalities.
- Our ENT specialist will also conduct neonatal ear examination to detect any hearing problem.
- Appointment will be given for your baby to come back for review. This is to ensure that your baby
is well and for you to discuss with your doctor any problems encountered at home. Appointment will be
given for subsequent visits for immunizations, physical and developmental assessments.
Birth registration
A birth registration form with necessary information will be given to you. However,
you will have to register your baby's birth at the Birth Registration Office at Jalan Anson within 14 days.
Postnatal follow up
Appointment will be given for you to come back for postnatal check up. A physical examination and certain investigations such as Pap Smear will be done.
This appointment will enable you to discuss with the doctor any problems encountered and family planning.
Your baby needs attention if he/she experienced the following:
- Fever
- Jaundice (Yellow Discolouration)
- Abdominal Distention
- Unusual Drowsiness/Inactive
- Pale/Cyanosis (Bluish colour)
- Diarrhoea/Vomitting
- Shortness of Breath
- Refused Feeding
- Foul Smelling Umbilical Cord
- Eye Discharge
- Prolong Crying
- Any abnormalities detected
Mother's condition that needs immediate medical attention
- Excessive bleeding per vagina
- Discharge from operation site - Blood/Pus
- Foul smelling vaginal discharge
- Fever (38 *c)
- Chest pain
- Difficulty in breathing
- Calf tenderness
- Pain/swelling of the leg
- Unable to pass urine
